What Are Orthodontic Services?
Orthodontic services straighten teeth and correct dental bite issues. Correcting orthodontic problems may be purely cosmetic or impact a patient's oral health.
Orthodontists see patients of all ages but frequently see children and adolescents. Your child's dentist may let you know at an early age that they require orthodontic care.
With the advancement of dental technology, many new treatment options, techniques and products are available to help correct orthodontic issues. These new technologies have vastly improved the efficiency of orthodontic treatment and the overall patient experience.
Orthodontic services offered by TMJ Plus Wellness Center include:
Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most popular type of orthodontic treatment. Metal braces consist of brackets affixed to the teeth, bands on the molars, and archwires connecting the two. Elastics secure the brackets and archwires. The bracketed teeth move gradually along the archwire as the dentist adjusts them. Metal braces are appropriate for most patients and can correct various orthodontic issues, including bite problems.
Clear Braces
Clear braces may be an excellent choice for patients who want more discreet treatment. Clear braces work like traditional metal braces, but the clear brackets enable them to blend into a patient's natural look; however can have some down side such as staining if you like lots of coffee, tea or red wine or colored beverages. Clear brackets can also have longer treatment times if the edge of the clear bracket can be not as strong and could fracture at times from elastics if needed. This aspect can cause treatment time to be longer as a trade off strength versus clear color.
Myobrace®
Patients wear the Myobrace® appliance at night and for one to two hours during the day. This appliance is a removable dental trainer that corrects muscle memory, emphasizes correct tongue posture and promotes good orthodontic health.
The advantage of Myobrace® is that the patient does not wear it during the day, so they can normally eat and drink without dietary restrictions. The device also teaches patients to breathe naturally through their noses.
TMJ Orthodontics
- TMJ (temporomandibular joint) syndrome happens when the joints connecting your lower jaw and skull become inflamed. Bite issues can cause TMJ, including overbites, underbites, and open bites. Orthodontic intervention can help to prevent and treat TMJ.
Non-Surgical Orthodontics
Non-surgical orthodontics can be used to correct misalignments or other abnormalities in the jaws and teeth. Dr. Coats and her team will utilize state-of-the-art-technology to provide a comprehensive overview of your facial structure and to create a treatment plan that offers both improved function and appearance.
Orthodontic Appliances
Our office provides several types of orthodontic appliances to treat various disorders:
- Space Maintainers: These appliances help when a child's primary teeth are lost too soon. The devices keep adult teeth from migrating into empty spaces.
- Palatal Expander Devices: These devices gradually increase the size of the upper palate to make more room for adult teeth and correct the dental bite.
- Anterior Modeling Appliances: These appliances also help to expand the jaw and correct bone growth patterns.
- Mandibular Advancement Appliance: These arches help to open airways and prevent sleep apnea by extending the lower jaw.
- Retainers: After orthodontic treatment, patients should wear their retainers for the required period to receive maximum benefit.
Benefits of Orthodontic Services
Orthodontic services straighten teeth for a beautiful, healthy smile. In addition to their cosmetic benefits, orthodontic treatment can significantly improve a patient's oral health.
A poor dental bite can cause difficulty chewing and talking and raise the chances of developing TMJ disorders. Maloccluded teeth are more likely to decay because food, plaque, and bacteria build up between them. Correcting these issues leads to better oral health.
Are You a Good Candidate for Orthodontic Services?
People of all ages are good candidates for orthodontic services. You may benefit from orthodontic treatment if you have a misaligned bite, crowded or widely spaced teeth, or TMJ symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontic Treatment
What is the best age to start seeing an orthodontist?
All children should visit the orthodontist by age 7. This time is when permanent molars emerge. The orthodontist can tell you whether your child will need further care in early childhood or adolescence.
How long do braces take?
Treatment times can vary from 18-36 months depending on the extent to your case, though the process is shorter when children start treatment early as you are developing the palate in a growing age. The time can be faster than an adult.
How should I care for my teeth if I have braces?
Follow your orthodontist's instructions. It would help if you brushed your teeth at least twice a day with an electric toothbrush, flossed daily with a water pick and or a floss threader to get under the wire to remove plaque and food . You can also clean under your wires and around your brackets with an interproximal brush called a proxy brush.
