Journey to Health

Many of our patients find us because of unresolved health issues that they have not been able to manage using conventional treatment. For instance, our team has helped patients who have been struggling to manage their diabetes or who may have problems losing weight. Through holistic examinations, we were able to connect the diabetes to untreated gum infections and the weight-loss issues to airway obstructions that were forcing the body to overwork.

Holistic Dentistry is the only approach to oral health that considers the big picture.

We believe holistic dentistry helps our patients live longer, healthier lives. It’s the best way to remove harmful metals and bone infections, both of which release toxins into your bloodstream and cause a variety of health issues including chronic fatigue, chronic inflammation, and digestive issues.

Instead of focusing on just your teeth, we also look at your muscles, bones, and airway. This wider perspective not only allows us to properly diagnose any dental issues you might have, but it also enables us to connect those issues to other health problems you may be having. As a result, we are able to provide you with solutions that will greatly improve the health of your entire body.

In addition to treatments such as Platelet Rich Plasma and Laser Dentistry that offer faster healing and less inflammation, our team also utilizes the following holistic treatments to identify and remove the source of  toxins in your bloodstream that cause a variety of health issues including chronic fatigue, chronic inflammation, and digestive issues.

  • Dental Cleanings

Holistic dental cleaning is a thorough process of cleaning your teeth and the surrounding tissue that addresses the bacteria in your mouth in a way that’s wholesome for your entire body.

  • Ozone Therapy

The process we use following the removal of infection uses ozone water to reduce the amount of bacteria commonly introduced into your body via lesser water systems. Ozone, O3 not O2, is used in a variety of procedures: cleaning after an infected tooth removal, infections, periodontal treatment for biofilm, to clean a tooth before placing a filling, teeth whitening enhancement, and is our water source for dental procedures.

  • CBCT 3D X-Ray

We use CBCT 3D digital x-rays to help pin point disease and to create surgical guides for more precise treatment.

  • Thermography Report Analysis

A diagnostic tool that can be used to locate inflammation which may be linked to decline in oral and total body health. Thermography analysis will be done by one of our referral providers .

  • Lower Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

Laser light therapy can be used to reduce pain and inflammation at a cellular level.

  • BPA and Metal Free Fillings

Replacing metal fillings can eliminate toxic chemicals that are simply resting in your mouth with non-toxic alternatives.

  • TMJ Treatment

In most cases, the source of your recurring dental trouble has much to do with TMJ alignment. Fix your alignment and the rest will follow.

  • Ceramic Dental Implants

Ceramic implants do not attract bacteria into the gums, have a much lower risk for gum tissue disease, and don’t conduct metal or heat energy.

  • DNA Connexions Testing

This oral panel test can be used to identify specific oral pathogens.

  • Safe Removal of Mercury Fillings

Mercury SAFE means that when mercury amalgam fillings are removed, we do so in a way that protects the environment, air, patient and team. When removing mercury, we follow the safety protocols of IAOMT, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology.

Protocols for safe removal of mercury include:

    • Isolating teeth to be worked on so mercury does not touch other tissues.
    • Using ozone treated water throughout the procedure and also prior to placement of a new restoration.
    • Using air filters to keep the air quality clean and an extra HEPA filter and vacuum system for the process.
    • We rinse with Chorella to remove any traces of mercury
    • Our team will work with your referring doctor or our health coach to create your customized plan of detox protocols for both before and after the procedure to cleanse your body of any trace amounts of HG. The body must be prepared to detox the stored metals that have been stored for years. Some examples of the protocols:
      • Correct homeopathic remedies
      • Proper Nutrition
      • Supplements to trigger the body’s healing mechanisms.

Paul's Story

Most of my life, I’ve worked as a pilot flying all kinds of aircraft. About 7 years ago, I retired in Ecuador, found some land that I liked in the Andes shortly after, and started building a self-sufficient farm.

While I was in the US learning about farming technology, I wanted to have some dental work done as well. I was looking for a dentist that understood the importance of energy pathways in each tooth and would not be inclined to use materials that would interfere with these. I was fortunate enough to find Dr. Becky Coats.

I expected the work to last for awhile, but seeing as how my mouth was an eclectic mix of veneers, different types of crowns, a few fillings, and some wisdom teeth I knew it wouldn’t be long before I needed more work.

Dr. Becky Coats evaluated my mouth and bite and planned a solution that would last. She put in new durable, attractive, nontoxic crowns, realigned and balanced the muscles that affect my bite, replaced a tooth loosened by a careless dentist in Ecuador with a seamless bridge, and made my smile overall much more attractive.

The transformation Dr. Coats orchestrated was well worth the trips back and forth to Ecuador and it will be worth any investment you may have to make.

Holistic Dentistry FAQs

  • Are you SMART certified (or higher) by the IAOMT?

Dr. Coats is SMART certified and a member of IAOMT.

  • Are you a mercury-safe dental office?

Yes, we have several steps in place for the safe removal of mercury fillings, including dental dams and isolation, air quality control and HEPA filters, a total air purification system, and Dentivac.

  • Do you avoid using fluoride treatments?

We do not offer fluoride treatments at our office.

  • Do you offer root canal alternatives?

We do not perform root canals, but instead utilize other methods of treatment. Ozone plays a large part in this, depending on the diagnosis.

  • Do you offer non-metal options for implants?

We use Z-Systems implants, which are metal-free.

  • Do you use ozone in your office?

Every patient does a pre-rinse with ozonated water to kill viruses, fungi, and bacteria. We use ozone in almost every procedure, including fillings, oral surgery, dental cavitation removal, abscesses, whitening, ozone periodontal trays and more.

  • Is your filling material BPA free?

Yes, we use BPA-free composite fillings.

  • Do you offer biocompatibility testing when placing a crown, implant, or filling material?

Yes, we use an outside lab for biocompatibility testing. There is an additional lab cost if you would like to test materials.

  • Do you check oral galvanism of metal restorations?

Dr. Coats does not perform this test, but we have another biological dentist and naturopath in the office who can when needed.

  • Do you use digital x-rays?

    Yes, we offer digital x-rays.

  • Do your CT scans include images of upper and lower arches?

CBCT is important because it allows us to evaluate maxillary sinuses, TMJ, and the airway; both dental arches must be evaluated in order to give us a complete picture of your oral health.

  • Do you send the CT scan to a radiologist for reading?

Yes, CT scans are sent to radiologists.

  • Do you recommend nutritional support or dietary changes?

Nutrition is an important part of dental health, as well as overall health. Most of our referrals are from other professionals, so many patients already have a health coach, naturopath, or wellness provider such as a nutritionist that we will work together with as a team. If not, then we will refer you to a provider who can support the nutritional needs Dr. Coats identifies based on your oral health.

  • Do you work with other holistic practitioners?

TMJ Plus is a wellness center, so we have many professionals in our network to support patients with a variety of issues and health concerns. Within the TMJ Plus Wellness building, we have access to a biological dentist, speech therapist, osteopath physician, naturopath, lymphatic specialist, and others, allowing us to work using a team approach when needed. On the other hand, a patient might already have a team of professionals in place, in which case TMJ Plus will work with their existing providers.
